does anything like this exist, that I could use VO to adjust the temp up or down and figure out what the temp is?
I wouldn't need it to be programmable, but I assume that's how it'd be.
If you mean in a house, yes.
Apple will have what they call connected devices soon that can be controlled with Siri even.
You can do it now, but in September when iOS 9 is released, it gets better.
You can say Siri set the temp to 68 degrees, turn the light on in the living room, and such things.
If that is what you are talking about, you are ready to jump.
Hi Jonboy. Yes these exist, we have one installed. However, I don't know
enough about US vs UK heating to know whether they are universal.
They have them here.
Hunningwell makes one, but they are going to improve, so I'd look after September.
Nathan did a topic similar, and has one. Hardyboy.
Wow, that's awesome news about Apple coming out with something like this. Woohoo! Our thermostats aren't touch-screen but they are digital and make no noise what so ever. For some reason, ours downstairs resets itself every night so the kidlet has to reset it in the mornings or we'll turn into burnt biscuits in our little Texas oven. Anyway, I'm glad to know I should wait until September because I was going to purchase one of the Honeywells this month. Shweew. Thanks, Wayne!
I'd wait if I could for the new models.
They have some now, but Septembers not all that long, so.
would I buy it direct from Apple ?
is there any more info or links to what I'd need , the cost etc?
No. Right now several companies make them.
After September, you'll have better selection as to features.
It is basicly an app installed on the phone, connected to the internet and so is the device.
You can now, and will be more able to control more then just your heating, and cooling, if you desire.
After September...Let me be the descenter here.
We've heard this song and dance before, that HomeKit would be ready and working in September 2014 with the release of iOS 8. This failed to happen. There is no telling whether that will happen a second time. If you need to replace your thermostat for any reason, why should you wait? It's a thermostat, not your daily driver computer.
If accessibility is a concern, Honeywell has an outstanding track record with that. My older total connect comfort Honeywell thermostats actually got more accessible once we installed a second zone, as I was now able to read, on the iPhone, the ambient temperature of each stat. But even in the old days when we only had the one, I could go to the website and see that on its own. Failing that, I could just ask it, as mine has some rudimentary and somewhat non-intuitive voice command support with synthetic feedback. In fact, this is why we have them, as we were asked by a buddy of my father's to test them. But this is an older model. If you insist on HomeKit, you can, in fact, buy a product right now. Read this.
There is really precious little reason not to buy now. Honeywell's stuff is accessible. Nest's stuff appears to be accessible...I don't have one to play with, but the login screen looks good. If you just want to control your thermostat from your phone, don't wait. Thermostats aren't going to suddenly make breakfast for you with homekit.
OK, that article is a little old...SOmewhere, I read that after that was published, Nest said no. However, Apple is already selling a HomeKit thermostat in its stores. Point is, just google around.
You could control these things with your phone for a while now.
These weren't created by Apple, but are available now.
Apple's is suppose to be good, so if you've got time and can wait, why not?
If I were in to controlling my homes systems as a blind person, I believe I'd add more services to this.
Lights, alarm system, and if I had a basement in a place that had issues with water, and alert system for flooding there.
Maybe add the coffee maker too. Lol
My mom's sprinkler system tech said that they even have sprinker systems that can be controlled with iDevices. That will be almost as awesome as the AC controller as my sprinkler system is completely inaccessible. Now, if I could only find that elusive dishwasher unloading app, I'd be all set. lol
Let me just say once again that just beause it doesn't do Home Kit, doesn't mean it can't be controlled with a phone. But I think folks who are counciling that you wait until September, E.G. forereel, might want to read this. That superceeds any info that I may have given earlier. I suspect homeKit is going to eventually bust. Don't bother waiting.
I'm an optimist. Smile.
I'll wait.
I don't need to control my house anyway, but.
Here’s an example of one that is abailable right now that works with both Android, and iOS.
Sensi Wi-Fi Programmable Thermostat for Connected Homes
Today it is going for $89 and I’m not sure how long that will last.
